Shree Neelavar Ramchandra Nayak

Late Shree N. Ramachandra Nayak. Innanje (1919- 2007)

Who does not know Neelavar Ramachandra Nayak, (Innanje) in the Rajapur Saraswat community?
A person who was down to earth, always compassionate to others’ sorrows and helping people beyond his capacity and capability. He was popularly known as SANSKRIT PANDIT as he was the only person in our community who had the title of SANSKRIT SHIROMANI. Some other people knew him as a great ASTROLOGER as he would guide people in difficult times by studying their horoscopes. People always took such advice as divine and so he had a great number of fans all over India.

He was born in a family of Agriculturists in 1919 to Smt. Rukmini and Shree Devappa Nayak in Neelavar, a small village near Brahmavar, in South Canara District of present Karnataka.

After his primary education in Neelavar and high school in Brahmavar, he was inspired to join “Shrimadbhuvanendra Mahavidyalaya” by the then Social Reformer of our community, Late Shree Neere Sham Nayak. He studied Sanskrit, Jyotish Shastra and Ayurveda as a part of his education there for eight years and achieved a title SANSKRIT SHIROMANI from Madras University.

Further he received VEDIC Education from Shree Karkal Shivarama Bhatji and started teaching Vedic Knowledge to the students who were learning Vedic Methodology and aspiring to become “Purohits” in Rajapur Saraswat Community at Bantakal in the auspices of Shree Durga Parameshwari Temple.

Soon after his marriage to Chi. Sow. Bhagirathi, he started teaching in a school in Kukkundoor near Karkal. However soon in 1945, he got an offer from S.V.H. High School, Innanje, a school promoted by Shree Shree Sode Mutt, one of the eight Mutts of Udupi. This was his dream job and he was very happy to teach Sanskrit to students in a famous school run by a Religious Education Trust. He continued as a Sanskrit Vidwan, an Astrologer and as a social reformer for 31 years and retired in 1976. This is how he was known as Innanje Ramachandra Nayak as he spent most part of his life there.

Throughout his life he was very keen on improving and uplifting the living standard of our community people who were mainly farmers. He preached to people that education is the only path to improve living standards and also achieving “Self Actualization” in one’s own life. At a very young age he started his active participation in Rajapur Saraswat Samaj. He took part in organizing “Akhil Bharatiya Rajapur Saraswat Sammelan” in 1956 in Bantakal.

This was an eye opener for Shree N. Ramachandra Nayak and he started dedicating most of his free time for our community work. In 1960 he was chosen as the Secretary to “Rajapur Saraswat Vidyavardhak Sangha” and he set out his plan with Late Shree Pilar Ramaraya Prabhu to raise an Education Fund by name “Durga Parameshwari Education Fund”. They both traveled all over Karnataka to reach people to collect money for this noble cause. This work continued for five years and in 1965 this fund was handed over to “Rajapur Saraswat Sangha, Bantakal” and the Rajapur Vidyavardhak Sangha was merged with the above Sangha.

As age started catching up, he decided to live with his children and he chose to move to Bangalore and live with his son. Even in city life, he made relentless effort to help the needy and people from various corners of India would approach him for help and get his blessings.

He started as a “writer” to communicate what he learned to the masses. First he wrote a book on “Sandhyavandan Vidhi” which was published in Bantakal. Next he wrote a book by name “PUSHPA GUCCHA” and was published in Mumbai in 1998. By then he moved to his children in Mulund, Mumbai. A musical tape containing “Keertans” written by him was also published in 2001, which most of our community people liked the most.

In 2006, he initiated an “Education Fund” and collected money from various donors. He handed over this Fund called “Vidyanidhi” to Rajapur Saraswat Sangha, Belgaum. Today students in and around Belgaum are receiving scholarship from this fund.

His end came on March 6, 2007 after a brief illness in Mumbai. Today, on his first Death Anniversary, people pay homage to this great personality. The Rajapur Saraswat Community has lost a Sanskrit Vidwan, an eminent Astrologer and above all a kind and loving person. MAY HIS SOUL REST IN PEACE!
